3.0 is coming to town

Looks like I complained too soon... movabletype.org: News announces that 3.0 will feature "Comment registration. As a response to both comment spam and to the increased usage of Movable Type on large community sites, we'll be adding the option to restrict comments to registered users. "

the question of whether the underlying architecture is stable and scalable is still an open one, but at least this accursed spam might be stopped.

Obviously, my opinion of whether MT is scalable is biased, but we've got people like About.com (600+ authors) and the Howard Dean blog (which sometimes gets 20 comments *per minute*) running on MT with basically stock installs. I find that the biggest bottleneck most people face is slow server hardware or unoptimized templates.

Of course, my own MT templates are a mess, so I'm probably not in *that* great a position to critique others. ;)

What's going to stop spammers from registering and then spamming? It's not to hard to write a automated script to do so..

Plus registering would stop many people from commenting.. at least those who just leave one in passing, if not the regular visitors. (I wouldn't have left a comment if I had to register)
