Great article, nice writing! One thing: "The ultimate in controlled vocabularies is a thesaurus." - check out http://topicmaps.org.

A thesaurus is still fairly limited in the types of relationships that is allowed: parents, siblings, children and associated terms are only a few types of relationships.

Why not define your relationships with more granularity? That's what topicmaps do: you can create your own crazy relationships, for example "... author of ...", or "... regularly seen in the same bar as ...", or: "... petting ..." (a relationship in which you'd have a "petter" and an "pettee") (yes, this topicmap stuff gets real funky real fast once you get going :).
